Hello World!

Welcome to Selfish Vegan!  Here I am, venturing forth into unknown territory, and I’ve decided to share that journey with you, you lucky ducks!  I grew up with meat and potatoes, and my taste in vegetables is fairly limited.  Successfully picking at a side of asparagus or frozen corn cooked in olive oil makes me feel like a vegetable-feuled warrior, self righteous and nourished by the bountiful earth.  These instances have been rare to say the least.

So why go Vegan?  Well there are so many good reasons to be Vegan and most of them fall into the Ethical Veganism category.  Animal rights, the health of the environment and the worldwide food crisis are all excellent reasons.  Good and honorable reasons to change yourself and your diet for the better.  Those are not my reasons.

Don’t misunderstand:  I am an animal lover and and I am thrilled to be giving up the flesh of sentient beings that have been tortured.  It’s just that my main reason for converting to Veganism is a selfish one.  I want to be healthier.  And I particularly want Husband to be healthier.  Adopting the logical diet for humans seemed like a good place to start.

  2. By explaining that almond milk is tasty, nutritious and delicious! If you really want to convince him, you could share with him some of the disgusting things that are found in cows milk. I won’t horrify everyone with links.

Well congratulations Selfish Vegan! You certainly have some solid reasons for your new found course of health and compassion! For me it was the information I learned about dairy and eggs… And about cows and chickens. As a vegetarian it all made sense to follow through with the rest. I don’t know though… If the truth can “horrify” — Isn’t it important to let people know it so they can make better choices too? I sure am glad someone informed me! :)
Anyway, good luck on your journey – Peace and a happy life!

    Wishing you all the best!

  5. Thank you for the well wishes, Bea. And yes, the truth can horrify. At this point, our public focus is turning our health around. All in good time friend.

I don’t believe there are self- centered Reasons to become a vegan. You can eat meat and dairy occasionally, and be healthy.
Those that stay vegan, wish not to harm.

To the previous comment from Richard: the Selfish Vegan’s desire to improve her family’s health is anything but self-centered. Follow your own mantra and wish no harm just because the SV’s views are not the same as yours! Any support for the vegan community is positive.

Love the website, especially the low-image homepage. I’ve been annoyed at the pic-saturated nature of vegan (or all?) food blogs, and SelfishVegan is downright visually refreshing.
