Weekly Menu 5.30.10

This week we’ll be soaking in the toasty Memorial Day weather, and indulging in a perennial favorite– breakfast for dinner. Sunday: Tofu and Fingerling Potatoes in Miso Gravy with Kale Chips Monday: French Toast Stuffed with Bananas and a Tofu Scramble Chocolate Dessert Cups with Strawberries and Whipped Soy Topping

Maybe you should just try it.

My parents think mayonnaise is repulsive.  I think my father might have liked mayonnaise once upon a time, but my mother unapologetically crushed that vice out of him early on in their marriage.  (I plan to follow suit with Husband and his inexplicable love of florescent orange “cheese” balls.)

Do you feel deprived?

Many wonder if we feel deprived since adopting a vegan diet.  In case you haven’t noticed the giant picture of chocolate chip cookies*, the short answer is no.  The long answer is slightly more involved.

Weekly Menu 5.23.10

This week I’ll be making some rather interesting versions of the “Superbowl Food” Husband requested for the Lost finale.  We’ll see how that goes… Sunday: Seitan Hot “Wings” and Chili “Cheese” Fries Monday: Coconut Crusted Tofu with Lemongrass and Peppers

“Well and what’s cheese?…”

“Well and what’s cheese?  Corpse of milk” – James Joyce I know it’s vulgar, but what do you want me to say?  That cheese everyone is so attached to is just bovine breast milk– coagulated, pressed and moldering, sliced into blocks for you to display at your next gathering of cheese eaters.

Sticks and Stones May Break My Bones, But Calcium Defends Thee

“Happy is the man who has broken the chains which hurt the mind, and has given up worrying once and for all.” – Ovid I know you love me.  But you’ve got to stop worrying about my calcium intake or you’ll perish from stress.  It may be hard to break from convention, but cow’s milk [...]

Weekly Menu 5.16.10

This week I’m taking one last stab at tempeh before I give up on it completely.  So far I hate it.  Any tips? Sunday: Black Bean Burgers with Sweet Potato Fries Monday: Panko Crusted Tofu on Fresh Salad Greens

The pleasure of a sandwich.

Broccoli Rabe.  I never would have imagined it possible that this super-vegetable could be the filling of a sandwich so awesome, so friggin’ delicious, that it would make me question the merits of every other sandwich I’ve ever tasted.  Ever.

If it’s wet and wobbly, you’re not doing it right.

I’ll explain this as plainly as possible:  Unpressed tofu is gross, whereas pressed and marinated tofu is delicious.  It took me a while to figure out this little gem and I wish someone had told me sooner.  That is why I am passing on my newfound breakthrough to you, dear friends.

Good morning Sunshine! Time for a healthy breakfast!

People seem to be at a loss for words when contemplating the possibilities of a vegan breakfast.  No bacon?  No eggs?  No milk in your cereal?  I know it seems grim, but you can start your day without slaughtering an animal and stuffing your arteries full of lard.  I promise.  I can hold your hand [...]

Weekly Menu 5.9.10

This week starts out on Mother’s Day, and who knows what the dinner will bring.  I’ll be splattering around in the rain with Big C and Little D tomorrow and definitely not making dinner. Monday: Lime Peanut Noodles with Seitan, Kale & Carrots

“Is this a dagger which I see before me…”

“Is this a dagger which I see before me, The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee.” — William Shakespeare “Be careful with that thing,” Husband clucked as I deftly sliced through a couple of bunches of scallions.  Chop, chop, chop.

Pressing News: Garlic Mincing a Thing of the Past

I’m not sure if you all know this, but you don’t actually have to mince up that garlic yourself.  I know!  It’s probably the one cooking task I hate the most because it gets all sticky and winds up all over the knife; I can’t get even pieces, and I could go on and on. [...]

Weekly Menu 5.2.10

Lots of new flavors this week– has anyone ever used liquid smoke flavor?  Seems a bit shifty to me.  What is it, fake grill flavor? Sunday: We have plans to actually exit our home to eat dinner.  I’m sure it will go really well. Monday: Smoky Miso Tofu and a Glazed Green Bean Salad
